2 Easy Veg Momos Recipe To Try Out at Home (Veg Dumpling Recipe)

1. Classic Veg Momos Recipe

Here’s a recipe for the classic easy veg momos recipe that is a fan favourite in Nepal, Darjeeling and Hilly areas in India and now in almost every city in India:

Ingredients for Dumpling Dough:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (125 grams)
  • ½ teaspoon oil
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons water (for kneading, or as needed)

Ingredients for Vegetable Stuffing:

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 2 small spring onions (scallions), finely chopped (reserve greens for later)
  • ½ teaspoon finely chopped garlic (or 3 to 4 small cloves, finely chopped)
  • 1.5 to 1.75 cups finely chopped mixed vegetables (suggestions: ½ cup cabbage, ½ cup carrots, ⅓ cup French beans, ¼ cup capsicum)
  • ½ cup chopped white button mushrooms (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper powder (or to taste)
  • Salt (to taste)

Making the Dough

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a bowl, mix all-purpose flour, salt, and oil.
  2. Knead the Dough: Gradually add water and knead until the dough is firm.
  3. Rest: Cover the dough and set it aside for 30 minutes.

Preparing the Vegetable Stuffing

  1. Chop Vegetables: Finely chop all the vegetables manually or use a food processor for quicker preparation for this easy veg momos recipe.
  2. Cooking Vegetables:
    • Heat oil in a thick-bottomed pan.
    • Add garlic and sauté for a few seconds on medium-low heat.
    • Add spring onion whites and continue to sauté for 10 to 15 seconds.
    • Introduce all chopped vegetables and stir fry on medium-high heat (adjust heat if your pan is thinner).

Shaping the Momos

  1. Divide the Dough: Split the dough into two parts, roll each into a log about 7 to 8 inches long, and slice into equal parts.
  2. Form Balls: Roll each slice into a ball and cover them with a damp cloth.
  3. Roll Out: On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a thin circle around 3 to 4 inches in diameter, keeping the edges thinner than the centre.
  4. Fill: Place 2-3 teaspoons of stuffing in the center of each circle.
  5. Pleat: Lift one edge of the dough and start pleating around the edge. Seal the pleats at the centre.

Steaming the Momos

  1. Prepare Steamer: Boil 1.5 to 2 cups of water in a steamer. Grease the steamer pan or idli moulds.
  2. Arrange Momos: Place momos in the steamer, ensuring they don’t touch each other.
  3. Steam: Cover and steam the momos for 5-6 minutes, until the dough turns slightly transparent and isn’t sticky.

Serving

  • Garnish: Remove the momos from the steamer, place them on a tray, and garnish with spring onion greens.
  • Serve: Enjoy your momos hot with schezwan sauce, tomato-chili sauce, or chilli sauce. Red chilli garlic chutney also makes a great accompaniment.

2. Paneer Schezwan Momos Recipe

Now let’s move onto one other easy veg momos recipe that is Paneer schezwan momos recipe that is loved by all and it gives a tangy and spicy twist to the classic veg momos whose recipe you just read above:

Ingredients for Momos Dough:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (125 grams)
  • ½ teaspoon oil
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons water (as needed)

Ingredients for Paneer Stuffing:

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • ½ teaspoon finely chopped garlic (about 3-4 small cloves)
  • 2 small spring onions (scallions), finely chopped (reserve the green tops for garnish)
  • ½ cup grated paneer (cottage cheese)
  • ½ cup finely chopped mixed vegetables (like cabbage, carrots, and capsicum)
  • 1 tablespoon Schezwan sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper powder (or to taste)
  • Salt (to taste)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, and oil.
  2. Knead: Gradually add water, kneading the mixture until a firm, smooth dough forms.
  3. Rest: Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for approximately 30 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare the Paneer Stuffing

  1. Chop Vegetables: Finely chop the mixed vegetables and spring onions. A food processor can expedite this step.
  2. Cook the Filling:
    • Heat oil in a spacious pan over medium-low heat.
    • Add chopped garlic and sauté briefly until fragrant.
    • Add the white parts of the spring onions and continue to sauté for a few seconds.
    • Stir in the finely chopped vegetables and cook for 2-3 minutes on medium-high heat until tender.
  3. Add Paneer and Spices:
    • Mix in the grated paneer and stir gently.
    • Add the Schezwan sauce, soy sauce (if using), salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, ensuring all ingredients are well combined.
  4. Finish Filling: Turn off the heat, fold in the reserved spring onion greens, and taste to adjust seasoning if required. Allow the filling to cool completely.

Step 3: Shape the Momos

  1. Divide the Dough: Split the dough into two portions. Roll each into a log about 7-8 inches long and cut into equal sections.
  2. Form Dough Balls: Shape each piece into a small ball and cover them with a damp cloth to prevent them from drying out.
  3. Roll Out: On a floured surface, flatten each ball into a thin circle, approximately 3-4 inches in diameter, keeping the edges thinner than the centre.
  4. Fill: Place 2-3 teaspoons of the cooled paneer mixture in the centre of each circle.
  5. Pleat and Seal: Fold up one side of the dough and start pleating along the edge, pinching to seal at the centre.

Step 4: Steam the Momos

  1. Prepare the Steamer: Bring 1.5 to 2 cups of water to a boil in your steamer. Lightly grease the steaming tray or idli moulds.
  2. Arrange the Momos: Place the prepared momos in the steamer, making sure they’re spaced apart to prevent sticking.
  3. Steam: Cover and steam for 5-6 minutes, or until the dough appears slightly transparent and no longer sticky.

Step 5: Serve

  1. Garnish: Once steamed, remove the momos and garnish with freshly chopped spring onion greens.
  2. Enjoy: Serve your Paneer Schezwan Momos hot with extra Schezwan sauce, tomato chilli sauce, or a spicy garlic chutney for an extra burst of flavour!
