Spread the love

Ever wondered why Indian homes smell absolutely heavenly during Diwali? It’s because every family is busy crafting these irresistible Diwali sweet treats that’ll make your taste buds do a happy dance!

Whether you’re a seasoned mithai maker or a curious first-timer, we’re here to walk you through some mouth-watering Diwali sweets that’ll have everyone asking for seconds (and thirds… let’s be honest!).

Trust me, there’s something magical about making these traditional treats at home. Not only do you get to control the sweetness (and sneak a few taste tests 😉), but you’ll also create some amazing memories in this Diwali with your loved ones in the process.

But before that, don’t forget to shop for the ingredients from Milkbasket, an online grocery app where you can order groceries online along with other items that are required to make these sweets!

So, grab your measuring cups and let’s get started with these tried-and-true recipes that’ll make your Diwali celebrations even sweeter!

1. Gulab Jamun

Gulab Jamun is a cherished Indian dessert distinguished by its round, syrup-soaked treats crafted from khoya, or reduced milk.

The preparation involves shaping the khoya into small balls, which are then deep-fried to achieve a golden-brown exterior.

Subsequently, these delectable spheres are immersed in a fragrant sugar syrup, often flavoured with cardamom and rosewater, resulting in a rich, indulgent delight that is celebrated across the subcontinent.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup khoya
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • Ghee or oil for frying
  • For the sugar syrup: 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, and a few cardamom pods

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Sugar Syrup: Combine sugar, water, and crushed cardamom pods in a saucepan. Boil until the sugar dissolves, then let it simmer for about 5 minutes. Set it aside to cool.
  2. Make the Dough: In a bowl, mix khoya, all-purpose flour, and baking soda to form a smooth dough. Divide the dough into small portions and roll them into smooth balls.
  3. Fry the Balls: Heat ghee or oil in a deep frying pan. Once hot, gently drop in the balls and fry them on low to medium heat until golden brown, ensuring they cook evenly. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  4. Soak in Syrup: While still warm, place the fried balls in the sugar syrup. Allow them to soak for at least an hour before serving.

2. Barfi

Barfi is such a delicious treat that comes in all sorts of flavors, but coconut barfi definitely stands out! Made with fresh coconut and just the right amount of sweetness, it’s a fun twist on the classic sweet.

You can whip it up using simple ingredients like sugar and milk or add in some nuts for an extra crunch. Perfect for satisfying those sweet cravings or sharing with friends!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup grated coconut (fresh or desiccated)
  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup milk powder
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • Chopped nuts for garnishing

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Mixture: Heat ghee in a non-stick pan and add grated coconut. Stir for a few minutes, then add condensed milk and milk powder. Cook on low heat, mixing continuously until it thickens and starts pulling away from the pan’s sides.
  2. Set the Barfi: Grease a plate or a square dish with ghee and transfer the mixture onto it. Flatten it using a spatula to about 1-inch thickness.
  3. Garnish and Cut: Once cool, sprinkle the chopped nuts over the top and press gently. Cut into squares or diamonds and serve.

3. Kaju Katli

Kaju Katli, the delicious cashew fudge, is basically the star of the show during Diwali! This rich and creamy treat, with its melt-in-your-mouth texture, makes it hard to resist grabbing just one more piece.

Made from finely ground cashews and infused with the goodness of cardamom, Kaju Katli is often decorated with a shiny silver leaf, which gives it that extra touch of elegance.

Whether you’re gifting it to friends or indulging in it yourself while celebrating, this sweet is always a crowd-pleaser and adds that touch of luxury to the festivities.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cashews
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • Edible silver foil (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cashew Powder: Grind the cashews in a blender to a fine powder. Be careful not to over-grind, as it may turn to paste.
  2. Make Sugar Syrup: In a pan, combine sugar and water and heat until the sugar dissolves. Allow it to boil until it reaches a one-string consistency.
  3. Mix the Ingredients: Lower the heat and add the cashew powder and cardamom powder to the sugar syrup. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens and you can form a dough-like consistency.
  4. Roll and Cut: Transfer the dough to a greased surface. Roll it out to a thin sheet and cut it into diamond or square shapes. Garnish with silver foil if desired.
