History of Coffee & Black Coffee Benefits For Health
Origins of Coffee
The legend says that coffee first originated in the Ethiopian plateau sometime circa the 8th Century AD. A goat herder named Kaldi noticed that his goats, having eaten berries from a certain plant, had suddenly become really energetic and had started prancing about. He took these beans to the abbot of the local monastery – and the rest, as we know, is history.
Coffee then soon spread to the Arabian peninsula. It became quite popular in countries like Turkey, Iran, Syria, Egypt, etc. By the 15th century, it was being grown in Yemen and became a popular household as well as a social beverage. Coffee Houses or ‘qahva khana’ began popping up everywhere in these parts and became centres of social interaction over cups of coffee. They soon become known as the ‘schools of the wise’.
From here, by the 17th Century, coffee had reached Europe and become extremely popular there as well. While some religious sects opposed its consumption, the drink was taken to the Pope himself, who absolutely loved it and gave it papal approval. The French, the Dutch, and English, then took it to most parts of the world. Today, coffee and cafes are found all across the world and have become an important part of humanity’s culture.
Black Coffee Benefits
- It Provides a Boost of Energy: Caffeine, the major chemical compound in coffee, is a Central Nervous System stimulant. It prohibits the reception of ‘adenosine’ and that allows other neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin to be absorbed more. This leads to a boost in energy levels.
- It Delays Fatigue: Studies have found that our body stays active longer and experiences fatigue later if we have consumed caffeine. This is one of the most common black coffee benefits experienced by athletes and bodybuilders. Therefore, they consume black coffee before a workout or training session.
- It May Help In Weight Loss: Studies have found that people who consumed more caffeine had lesser body fat. They, especially men, also lost weight faster with increased amounts of coffee intake. However, this was particularly linked to coffee with less cream and sugar.
- It is Rich in Antioxidants: The fruit and seeds of the coffee tree both contain antioxidants. These compounds can help boost immunity, provide relief from aches and pains, and also help against chronic diseases. Because of these properties and their texture, coffee is also used in natural remedies and products for hair and skin.
- It May Improve Gut Health: Coffee is rich in fibre and has prebiotic properties. Scientific studies have revealed that people who consumed coffee frequently had a greater diversity of microorganisms in the microbiome of their gut. This has been linked to better digestion and bio-absorption of nutrients.
- May Help Improve Brain Function: Researchers have also found a link between the consumption of coffee and slowing down cognitive decline. It may help in improving memory and attention too. One of the major black coffee benefits that have come forth is reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s as one gets older. Also, it is not just caffeine that is responsible for these health benefits. Scientists believe there are other compounds in coffee that contribute to this and they’re researching to know more about them.
