Celebrating 75 years of Independence
India is all geared up to celebrate its 76th Independence Day today to embark on the freedom from British rule on August 15, Monday. India achieved its Independence from the British Raj on August 15, 1947. This struggle for freedom was a long and tiresome one. The country witnessed the sacrifices of many freedom fighters, who laid down their lives for their country and fellow citizens.
This day remembers and honours our freedom fighters, the history of our country, its culture, and the nation’s achievements as a whole. It is also a reminder to every Indian citizen about the dawn of a new beginning. The beginning of an era of deliverance from the clutches of British colonialism for more than 200 years. This day embodies the energy of patriotism in every citizen. We sit and witness this journey of 75 years of India as a free country. As today we pay our regards to all our freedom fighters who made it possible for us to live and breathe in a free land.
Our History
The fight for India’s independence began during World War I. The movement was predominantly led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi; now known as the father of our nation. On July 4, 1947, the Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British House of Commons. The bill was finally passed within a fortnight. This marked the end of over 200 years of British rule on August 15, 1947. Many leaders played a prominent role in the Indian freedom struggle. Some of these brave citizens included Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (the iron man of India); Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Subhas Chandra Bose (the three invincible freedom fighters of India) Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and many more.
Independence Day Significance
As we complete the journey of 75 years of freedom in India, it is time to remind us all of the many sacrifices our freedom fighters made to get us Independence from British rule. Indian Independence Day (15th August) is a national holiday throughout the country. The country’s history includes many events of retaliation and uprisings led by the freedom fighters. The fight for freedom eventually drove the Britishers out. It forced Lord Mountbatten, Viceroy of India at that time, to free the country from colonial rule on August 15, 1947. However, the day also marked the unforgettable partition of British-ruled India into two countries – India and Pakistan.
There are many horrific events that completely broke the spirit of Indians and the culture and values we stood for. As the British showed their atrocities on the citizens of the country. One of such incidents was the massacre of Jallianwala Bagh in 1919. The open fire over a silent protest took the lives of many innocent souls, men, women & even kids.
Such atrocities gave rise to invincible souls like Shaheed Bhagat Singh & Chandra Shekhar Azad. Their constant revolts against the British and Mahatma Gandhi’s public protests like the Dandi March led to a huge change in the citizens of India. As a result, a wave of freedom and patriotism for our culture and nation spread like wildfire amongst the citizens. This finally led to the British leaving India as an independent country.
On August 15, 1947, the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of Red Fort in Delhi. It is a tradition that has since followed by every Prime Minister with an address to the country. Independence Day is thus a celebration with the hoisting of the tiranga, parades, cultural events, and citizens singing patriotic songs to dive into the spirit.
