Burgers are one food item we all just love to eat anytime, all the time. A burger is cooked by placing a filling of meat or vegetables between slices of a bun; generally the bun is round. People love to eat them and thus have given rise to many restaurants and local vendors engaged in selling of burgers.

No matter how simple burgers look to be, these too have alot of interesting facts hidden between those soft buns! Let’s look some of these one by one!

A Hamburger Has No Ham In It!

This is arguably the most debated topic, holding alot of misconception in the minds of alot of people. A hamburger is called a hamburger not because of the patty or the filling it has, but because of the place of it’s origin. 

Hamburgers are called hamburgers because they originate from Hamburg, Germany. Rather, it gets its name from the origin of the burger. Hamburg, Germany has the credit for making the modern-day hamburger.

However, They were not  the ones who came up with the concept. According to the Online Dictionary, the hamburger is “the meat product so called from 1880 (as hamburg steak), named for the German city, though no certain connection has ever been put forth.” 

The idea of the hamburger, however, might have appeared in first-century Rome, where there is a record of ground or minced meat that was flavored with pepper, wine, and pine nuts

But how did this minced beef patty become the sandwich we know as the hamburger? 

The history isn’t completely clear. Some credit brothers Frank and Charles Menches with putting a patty between two slices of bread in the aptly named town of Hamburg, New York, in 1885.

California Gave Us The Cheeseburger 🍔

Cheeseburger is a hamburger with cheese (with other toppings and ingredients). Cheese is placed on a hot patty and its heat melts the cheese. Other ingredients that are often part of a cheeseburger are lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mustard, mayonnaise, burger sauce and ketchup.

It appeared for the first time and became popular between the 1920s to 1930s. Lionel Sternberger worked at his father’s sandwich shop “The Rite Spot“, in Pasadena, California, when he was 16 and one claim is that he invented the first cheeseburger in 1926. 

One story says that he experimented with different tastes and placed a piece of American cheese on a hot, just prepared, hamburger patty. Other story says that a passing homeless man suggested Lionel to add cheese to hamburgers.

How Many Types Of Burgers Are There?

There can virtually be an infinite number of burgers depending on the patty, burger ingredients and the fillings one chooses. However, these are the prominent types of burgers you’ll find common around the world:

  1. Vegetable Burger: Consiste of a patty usually made from mashed potatoes, mixed with some vegetables and sauces sandwiched between a bun.
  2. Classic Hamburger: Consists of a thick ¼ pound mutton, beef or lamb patty that is chargrilled or fried along with burger sauce, lettuce, cheese and onion rings.
  3. Cheeseburger: A simple burger, more towards being a fast food wherein the patty is made of any preferred meat, fried or grilled along with a lot of cheese slices sandwiched between a bun.
  4. Chicken Burger: Similar to a hamburger, but the patty here is made of chicken. A delight for people who avoid red meat.
  5. Grilled Chicken Burger:: The patty here is not really a patty but a chargrilled chicken breast that is sandwiched within the bun along with some sauces, lettuce, onions and tomato slices. Considered to he the healthiest of all the burgers.
  6. Soy/Paneer Burger: The go-to burger for vegetarians where the patty is made of paneer or soy granules coupled with the usual burger fillings sandwiched between a burger bun.

Is Burger Healthy For You?

Like any other edible food, consuming anything in excess is surely unhealthy for your body. That being said, the type of burger you choose to prepare and the selection of fillings, patty, sauces and the bun will overall decide the health impacts of the burger.

Wherein Grilled Chicken Burger might be a bit on the healthier side, a California Cheeseburger, on the other hand, is always ready to deliver some serious doze of calories to your body.  Likewise, a soy or paneer burger patty will contain less calories as compared to a patty made from red meat. The way the patty is cooked ( grilled or fried) will influence the health impact of the burger as well.

So the right way forward is to keep a check on all these points before ordering or preparing a burger as per your wish and counting out those calories accordingly! 

A Delicious Vegan Soy Burger Recipe 🤤

Who said that burgers can only be enjoyed by those who eat meat!? This mouth watering vegan soy burger will tingle your taste buds and make you enjoy a burger that is delicious, juicy and wholesome. These burgers have a crisp pan fried party or cutlet made with soy chunks or vegetable proteins, spices and herbs.

Ingredients you need:

  1. 1 pack of soya chunks (nuggets)
  2. 1/2 cup green peas
  3. 1 carrot, peeled and chopped
  4. 1 tsp roasted coriander (dhania) seeds powder
  5. 1/2 bunch of chopped coriander (dhania) leaves
  6. 1/4 tsp roasted cumin seeds (jeera) powder
  7. 1/4 tsp garam masala
  8. 3 medium sized potatoes, boiled & mashed
  9. 1″ piece of crushed ginger (adrak)
  10. 2 green chillies
  11. 3 cloves of garlic, crushed
  12. Besan (Bengal gram flour) for coating
  13. salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Boil nuggets in hot water for 5 minutes until they are soft and fluffy.
  2. Squeeze out all the water from the nuggets.
  3. In a food processor, add all the ingredients except potatoes and chickpea flour. Blend to a grainy consistency.
  4. In a large bowl, mix the blended ingredients with the mashed potatoes to form a smooth, pliable mixture.
  5. Divide the mixture into 6 portions. Shape them into burgers.
  6. Place the burgers in the fridge for 15 minutes. Make a batter out of chickpea flour, turmeric and water.
  7. Dip each burger into the chickpea batter and fry in a shallow saucepan. Drain on a tissue paper.
  8. Serve the burgers in a lightly toasted hamburger buns, top it with Maggi masala, chilli sauce, thousand Island dressing then lettuce and onion and tomato slices.
